Szenische Metaphysik
Szenische Metaphysik: BD113 .H63 2019
Author(s): Wolfram Hogrebe
Frankfurt am Main : Vittorio Klostermann [2019]
The question of 20th century philosophy was: how are we humans situated in our world? In forms of consciousness, as Husserl insistently analyzed, in language games, as Wittgenstein thought, or in a prior understanding of being, as Heidegger recommended? Wolfram Hogrebe summarizes these answers in what he calls scenic existence. This is grounded in certainties in which we experience ourselves sensitively 'tinted'. In this respect, forms of consciousness, language games and understanding of being are only built up from an anonymous sonority. Wolfram Hogrebe has been following these circumstances for several years. In this new book, he delineates the project in historically informed, multi-faceted differentiations, terminating in a plea for a new enlightenment that may be understood as a program for our time.

Genealogies of the Secular: The Making of Modern German Thought
Genealogies of the Secular: The Making of Modern German Thought: BT83.7 .G46 2019
Author(s): Willem Styfhals, Stéphane Symons
Albany : State University of New York Press [2019]
Presents a historical and philosophical overview of the twentieth-century German debates on secularization, and their significance for contemporary discussions about the relationship between theology and modernity. While the concept of secularization is traditionally used to define the nature of modern culture, and sometimes to uncover the theological origins of secular modernity, its validity is being questioned ever more radically today. Genealogies of the Secular returns to the historical, intellectual, and philosophical roots of this concept in the twentieth-century German debates on religion and modernity, and presents a wide range of strategies that German thinkers have applied to apprehend the connection between religion and secularism. In fundamentally heterogeneous ways, these strategies all developed “genealogies of the secular” by tracing modern phenomena back to their religious or theological roots. This book aims to disclose the complex prehistory of the contemporary debates on political theology and postsecularism, and to show how prominent thinkers continue this German tradition today. It explores and assesses the classic theories of secularization that are epitomized in Carl Schmitt’s writings on political theology, but also addresses German philosophers whose work has been rarely associated with secularization, including Walter Benjamin, Ernst Cassirer, Martin Heidegger, Immanuel Kant, and Hannah Arendt. Attention is also paid to two thinkers whose role in these discourses has not been fully explored yet: Jacob Taubes and Jan Assmann. By introducing their thinking on religion, politics, and secularization, the book also makes two of their own key texts available to an English-language readership. “What makes the book so valuable pedagogically is the clarity and scope of its synthetic gestures about the dense questions congealing around the topic of secularization. It offers a pronouncement of central significance, emerging from some of the most important contemporary voices in these fields. The scholarship is internationally informed and engaged, even as it feels vibrant, immediate, and agenda setting.” — Ward Blanton, University of Kent, Canterbury

After the Berlin Wall: Memory and the Making of the New Germany, 1989 to the Present
After the Berlin Wall: Memory and the Making of the New Germany, 1989 to the Present: DD290.24 .H37 2019
Author(s): Hope M. Harrison
Cambridge, United Kingdom ; Cambridge University Press 2019.
The history and meaning of the Berlin Wall remain controversial, even three decades after its fall. Drawing on an extensive range of archival sources and interviews, this book profiles key memory activists who have fought to commemorate the history of the Berlin Wall and examines their role in the creation of a new German national narrative. With victims, perpetrators and heroes, the Berlin Wall has joined the Holocaust as an essential part of German collective memory. Key Wall anniversaries have become signposts marking German views of the past, its relevance to the present, and the complicated project of defining German national identity. Considering multiple German approaches to remembering the Wall via memorials, trials, public ceremonies, films, and music, this revelatory work traces how global memory of the Wall has impacted German memory policy. It depicts the power and fragility of state-backed memory projects, and the potential of such projects to reconcile or divide.

Mark Aurel: Kaiser, Denker, Kriegsherr
Mark Aurel: Kaiser, Denker, Kriegsherr: DG297 .K85 2019
Author(s): Wolfgang Kuhoff
Stuttgart : Verlag W Kohlhammer 2019.

Muslimische Sklaverei: Ein "vergessenes" Verbrechen
Muslimische Sklaverei: Ein "vergessenes" Verbrechen: HT919 .M87 2018
Author(s): Manfred Pittioni
Berlin : Lit [2018]

Carl Schmitt: State and Society
Carl Schmitt: State and Society: JC263.S34 R37 2019
Author(s): William Rasch
London ; Rowman & Littlefield International Ltd [2019]
This important new book places Carl Schmitt’s critique of liberal political theory in a broader historical context than is usually done. His belief in the centrality of the European state since the seventeenth century derives from various sources, including medieval (Scholastic) theology and nineteenth century (post-Hegelian) social and political theory. Schmitt’s famed ‘political theology’ aims at justifying the necessity of a strong secular state as the safeguard of a political community against the encroachment of legally protected interest groups that shield themselves behind pre-political rights. William Rasch neither condemns nor champions Schmitt’s various attacks on liberalism, but does insist that the tension between ‘society’ as the realm of individual rights to pursue private pleasures and the ‘state’ as the placeholder for something traditionally called the common good is a conundrum that is as important now as it was during the Weimar era in Germany. Reappraisal of some of the pillars of liberal dogma are as much in order as are fears of their demise.

Haunted Bauhaus: Occult Spirituality, Gender Fluidity, Queer Identities, and Radical Politics
Haunted Bauhaus: Occult Spirituality, Gender Fluidity, Queer Identities, and Radical Politics: N332.G3 O88 2019
Author(s): Elizabeth Otto
Cambridge, Massachusetts : The MIT Press [2019]
An investigation of the irrational and the unconventional currents swirling behind the Bauhaus's signature sleek surfaces and austere structures. The Bauhaus (1919-1933) is widely regarded as the twentieth century's most influential art, architecture, and design school, celebrated as the archetypal movement of rational modernism and famous for bringing functional and elegant design to the masses. In Haunted Bauhaus, art historian Elizabeth Otto liberates Bauhaus history, uncovering a movement that is vastly more diverse and paradoxical than previously assumed. Otto traces the surprising trajectories of the school's engagement with occult spirituality, gender fluidity, queer identities, and radical politics. The Bauhaus, she shows us, is haunted by these untold stories. The Bauhaus is most often associated with a handful of famous artists, architects, and designers--notably Paul Klee, Walter Gropius, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and Marcel Breuer. Otto enlarges this narrow focus by reclaiming the historically marginalized lives and accomplishments of many of the more than 1,200 Bauhaus teachers and students (the so-called Bauhausler), arguing that they are central to our understanding of this movement. Otto reveals Bauhaus members' spiritual experimentation, expressed in double-exposed "spirit photographs" and enacted in breathing exercises and nude gymnastics; their explorations of the dark sides of masculinity and emerging female identities; the "queer hauntology" of certain Bauhaus works; and the role of radical politics on both the left and the right--during the school's Communist period, when some of the Bauhausler put their skills into the service of the revolution, and, later, into the service of the Nazis. With Haunted Bauhaus, Otto not only expands our knowledge of a foundational movement of modern art, architecture, and design, she also provides the first sustained investigation of the irrational and the unconventional currents swirling behind the Bauhaus's signature sleek surfaces and austere structures. This is a fresh, wild ride through the Bauhaus you thought you knew.

Welcome to the Jungle
Welcome to the Jungle: N6496.3.G3 D879 2018
Author(s): Anna Lena Seiser, Gregor Jansen
Wien : Kunsthalle Düsseldorf; VFMK Verlag für moderne Kunst [2018]
The exhibition 'Welcome to the Jungle' at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and its catalogue present video installations, performances, space-encompassing presentations and site-specific works by 9 international artists who all live in different cultural contexts. The selected works observe specific situations or developments in the sphere of consumption, sustainability or the state of contemporary society, doing so in a way that is reflective and often humorous. Some of the artists make use of documentary practices and, without seeming moralistic, point to the unattainability of an ultimate truth or the right way. They also break with the medial or formal norms of the selected practices and explore the social role of art and its protagonists, not just from political but also from economic, social and ecological perspectives. Exhibition: Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Germany (03.03. - 21.05.2018).

Hotel garni' is the first monograph on the work of Peter Knoch (*1961). The book shows a poetic oeuvre that deals with existential questions of loneliness, illness, and death. In its accompanying texts, Susanne Prinz and Isabelle Meiffert elaborate on recurring motifs and, in a conversation with Max Dax, Knoch tells of his creative process between Berghain, childhood myths, and the chansons he writes.

Kunsthaus Zürich presents a large exhibition curated by Cathérine Hug commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing in 1969. The Moon landing of the US-American Apollo 11 space capsule altered our relation-ship to space and our environment. The view of Earth from space gave rise to a new awareness of the fragility of our planet and the threats posed by human's existential interventions. This discourse, though more topical than ever, is not the only thematic focus; on the contrary, the exhibition and the richly illustrated catalogue seek to address this enduring mystery that continues to fascinate all cultures of the world, from the 19th century to the present. The journey through the history of artistic exploration of the Moon includes topics such as »Celestial cartography and lunar topography«, »Ailments associated with the Moon«, »Moon light and shadows«, the »Colonization of the Moon« and »Rockets and Moon vehicles«!Artists: Darren Almond, Kader Attia, John Baldessari, Rosa Barba, Frances Bodormo, René Burri, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Robert Delaunay, Vladimir Dubossarsky & Alexander Vinogradov, Max Ernst, Sylvie Fleury, Johann Heinrich Füssli, Liam Gillick, Kiki Kogelnik, Katie Paterson, Niki de Saint Phalle, Robert Rauschenberg, Yinka Shonibare, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky et al.

Bielefeld, Germany : Kerber Verlag [2019]
The paintings of Anna Leonhardt take time. Little by little, an astonishing light that gives the pictorial spaces clarity and definition emerges from the roughly applied, expressive paint. Her pictures are very direct, but based on experience. The atmospheres and sensations unfolded by its lines and its paint carry Anna Leonhardt's painting. Mere surfaces become broad, atmospheric spaces, while individual colors begin to vibrate reciprocally and enthrall us as viewers. The book presents her painterly work for the first time.

Romer + Romer: Burning Man/Electric Sky
Romer + Romer: Burning Man/Electric Sky: ND588.R5757 A4 2019
Author(s): Nina Römer
Dortmund : Verlag Kettler c2019.
Römer + Römer are well-known for their unique position in painting. Nina Römer (born as Nina Tangian in Moscow in 1978) and Torsten Römer (born in Aachen in 1968) met while studying painting at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Their joint works often focus on big cultural events where people come together to experience moments of transcendence. In 2017, the Berlin artist couple traveled to Nevada to take part in the Burning Man event. What began as a small bonfire in 1986 has evolved into a cultural phenomenon of epic dimensions that attracts around 70,000 people to the Black Rock Desert every year. The scene is set at Black Rock City, a temporary city that exists only for eight days. The event, which features hundreds of interactive art installations, art cars, and performances, culminates in the burning of the 'Man,' a 40-feet tall effigy that is the centerpiece of the celebration. The two artists selected some of their photos of the event and used them to create a series of large-format paintings that strikingly capture the desert festival's carnivalesque spirit and nighttime scenery with fire and artificial lights. Exhibition: Haus am Lützowplatz, Berlin, Germany (18.01. - 10.03.2019).

Biological Modernism: The New Human in Weimar Culture
Biological Modernism: The New Human in Weimar Culture: PT405 .G436 2020
Author(s): Carl Gelderloos
Evanston, Illinois : Northwestern University Press 2020.
Biological Modernism identifies an intellectual current in the Weimar Republic that drew on biology, organicism, vitalism, and other discourses associated with living nature in order to redefine the human being for a modern, technological age. Contrary to the assumption that any turn toward the organic indicated a reactionary flight from modernity or a longing for wholeness, Carl Gelderloos shows that biology and other discourses of living nature offered a nuanced way of theorizing modernity rather than fleeing from it. Organic life, instead of representing a stabilizing sense of wholeness, by the 1920s had become a scientific, philosophical, and disciplinary problem. In their work, figures such as Alfred Döblin, Ernst Jünger, Helmuth Plessner, and August Sander interrogated the relationships between technology, nature, and the human and radically reconsidered the relationship between the disciplines as well as the epistemological and political consequences for defining the human being. Biological Modernism will be of interest to scholars of German literature and culture, literary modernism, photography, philosophical anthropology, twentieth-century intellectual history, the politics of culture, and the history of science.

Ostfildern Hatje Cantz [2019]
In this volume of photographs the photographer Christine Fenzl investigates the living conditions of young people in the peripheral areas of Berlin: Hellersdorf, Hohenschönhausen, Lichtenberg, Marzahn, and Treptow. Although the Berlin Wall once strongly influenced their parents' living environment, the generation born after the collapse can no longer imagine what it was like. In her sensitive pictures Fenzl traces the sto-ries of these youth, their expectations, and their confrontation with Berlin. Fenzl has already examined the subject of youth and their social circumstances in previous series, such as Striking Chance - Streetfootball, for which she photographed children playing soccer in Nairobi, Skopje, London, and the favelas of São Paulo.
